In this talk I will describe the key components of a framework for tackling refactoring and I will share some of the learnings accumulated along the way. This talk is a case study on using WebAssembly to power sandbox.bio, a platform for command-line tutorials for bioinformatics. However, as frontend engineers we often forget to take these idiosyncrasies into account, or choose to simply apply industry standards such as WCAG 2.1 AA without digging deeper. In this talk, Steph shares some of the ways you can create better web experiences for the neurodivergent.

If you use the Next.js app directory, you might not even have noticed it, but you are not only using React Server Components, but you are also using the new streaming SSR feature of React.That means that on first page load, your Client Components will now be server-side rendered, suspense boundary by suspense boundary, and constantly streamed to the client, where they are rehydrated piece-by-piece.
If you combine that with suspense for data fetching in your client components, you will suddenly be facing hydration mismatches - as your client components will start fetching data on the server, but the data will not be transported to the client.
In this talk, I will go over the rocky journey that we had to go through to support suspense for data fetching in Streaming SSR with Apollo Client, looking at all the curious timing problems that come up with these technologies, and how we try to solve them as best as we can - always with the best possible user and developer experience in mind.

I've been researching the secret behind Node.js' power and why there are so many new JavaScript runtimes coming up. Breaking down each key component used on Node.js I've come to interesting conclusions that many people used to say whereas in practice it works a bit differently.
In this talk, attendees will learn the concepts used to create a new JavaScript runtime. They're going to go through an example of how to make a JavaScript runtime by following what's behind the scenes on the Node.js project using C++. They'll learn the relationship between Chrome's V8 and Libuv and what makes one JavaScript runtime better than others.

The field of developer relations or DevRel is rapidly increasing in popularity, with roles for developer advocates, evangelists, program managers, and directors appearing seemingly everywhere. It could very well be that you too have colleagues who work in the field. DevRel is a unique discipline aligned with every part of the business from engineering and product, to marketing, and even sales, and acts as a bridge between the company and the wider developer community. Our aligned incentives with engineering leadership are especially obvious in the fact that we exist to serve and enable developer audiences, whether external or internal.For engineering teams, working closely with your DevRel teams provides a great opportunity to better understand your developer audiences, raise the profiles and skills of your colleagues, and make your company more attractive for hiring. Yet, despite many DevRel teams being highly technical, because of DevRel’s perceived lack of focus, our departments are often dismissed as “just marketing” by engineering.In this talk I will answer the question of “what is it that DevRel people do”, and present some approaches for how DevRel and engineering can best collaborate and break down silos to benefit everyone, from the company to the wider developer community.

Widgets are custom, interactive objects you place in a Figma or Figjam file to extend functionality and make everything a bit more fun. They are written in a declarative style similar to React components, which gets translated to become a node on the canvas. So can you go the other way, from canvas to code? Yes! We’ll discuss how we used the public Figma plugin API to generate widget code from a design file, and make a working widget together using this.

The Great British Public Toilet Map is an open source, community driven project dedicated to helping people find toilets across the UK, with around 14,000 loos recorded and counting. In 2021 we took on the challenge of migrating the project from a SPA React app written in JavaScript to NextJS and Typescript. Together we'll discover why we decided it was time to migrate, the myriad technical challenges we faced along the way, how this work benefits our users, and the many exciting plans we have for the future.

React is so powerful that it can be used for more than frontend development. E.g. creating UI programmatically in the backend using a rule-based system or machine learning is another use case where React can serve as the best fit. Similarly, documentation earlier used to have only .md files but now it also includes .mdx file that contains React code. To fulfill such use cases, developers need to understand the internals of React and the tooling around it. Some great sources are popular codebases such as create-react-app, Next.js, etc. In this talk, I will share the lessons we learnt while creating a framework that achieves more than web development using React. Firstly, I will cover how create-react-app codebase is the best codebase to understand how webpack, babel, eslint, typescript etc. can be used alongside React. Secondly, I will share how Next.js teaches us to create a js framework where we can write backend and frontend in the same file and still be able to separate the two during calls. Thirdly, I will share how our framework supports plugins, i.e. the React code resides in multiple repositories but all of this code can share a single React runtime inside the browser. This is a very advanced use of React that cannot be achieved by code splitting using React.lazy. This talk will enable developers to use React for more than frontend development.

Next.js has grown in popularity over the past couple of years with features like server-side rendering, incremental static regeneration, image optimization, and more. Next.js is known as the production ready framework for React. In contrast, GraphQL is known for not just returning data for what you need with good schema design practices but also a good dev experience. In this talk, I’ll talk about how one can build an app that not just scales but also has high performance with Next.js, GraphQL and Tailwind. And Lastly, the future of CSS and Frontend development is building utilities, so CSS does not feel like an afterthought. At the end of this talk, you will learn how to go from making a sample app to a highly performant production-ready application.

In this talk, I'll present the many complex problems and solutions that I've encountered when working with arrows in my open source library perfect-arrows and later in tldraw (tldraw.com). With a narrow scope and plenty of animations to guide the way, we'll look at intersections, arrow heads, arrow head angles, and all of the different user interface issues behind authoring and adjusting arrows between shapes, other shapes, and points.

Error state, loading state, awkward breakpoint, bad data, poor formatting, browser support. Every component can result represent hundreds or thousands of discrete visual states. How do you test it? Manually disable the network — temporarily. Insert bad code — just for a minute. Paw at the edge of your screen. Hack local database fixtures to bits. Frontend development has so many dimensions. Time and variation result in an infinite number of UI possibilities. In this talk, we'll use Storybook to progressively develop, test, and document our work — automating the grunt work of UI development.

AG Grid is the industry standard JavaScript datagrid for building data centric Business Applications. Recently the AG Grid team redesigned the grid to implement the React Rendering Engine in 100% React code. Given the complexity of a datagrid, this was a very challenging task. NextJS is an excellent full stack framework. Contentful is a well-known flexible headless CMS. Together are a great match, but when we talk large scale projects the challenges are completely different than the ones you may face in a small to medium scale project. More and more, React is being used for complex apps that accommodate numerous types of users, workflows, and mechanics. Sometimes it’s different people who each use part of the app, but a single-user multi-workflow scenario isn’t uncommon as well.In this session, we’ll learn about our options when building multiple experiences within a single React app — without losing our sanity. I’ll use some examples from what we do at Wilco.

JavaScript has a lot of use cases - one of them is automated browser detection. This is a technical talk overviewing the state of the art automated browser for ad fraud, how it cheats many bot detection solutions, and the unique methods that have been used to identify it anyway.

If you don’t have time to build it right, when will you have time to build it twice? In hyper growth startups the old adage breaks down. You get an expanding time horizon – IF you can get it shipped. An imperfect feature next week beats the perfect feature 2 months from now. Your code won’t matter if you’re dead. I didn’t believe this until I saw it myself. A startup on the cusp of hockeystick hired me to rewrite their jQuery app in React. Their tech proved the idea then became a burden. Over the next year we rewrote the whole app from scratch, grew a team of React experts, created a codebase that’s a joy to work with, and got the company to a $100,000,000 Series B. All because the early engineers knew that if the crappy version works out, there’s going to be time and resources to fix it later. This talk is about what I’ve learned while rewriting an app with users banging down the door.

i18n isn't easy, but with careful planning of your content model I'll show you how to structure the setup, authoring, and querying of localized content. Covering whole-or-part translated documents, the difference between market and language-specific content, ways to author that in a CMS like Sanity, and ways to query for it on frontends like Next.js and Remix.

React has a great security standard as default, but if you don’t pay close attention to the details you could get burned by some of the escape hatches APIs, or even by just passing props insecurely to components. I’ll teach you how to avoid these pitfalls.

At AG Grid, we maintain thousands of code demos, with the same demo in Angular, React, Vue, and Vanilla JS. Additionally, each framework has different variations covering JavaScript, TypeScript, Modules, Packages, Hooks, Classes, Vue 2, and Vue 3. How do we do it? We automate. By interacting with the Colyseus community over the past few years, some fundamental questions (not necessarily connected with the framework) seem to appear time and time again when developers start to build their own multiplayer games. This talk is going to cover some of these questions, as well as the most common scenarios and techniques you can start using today when building your own multiplayer game.

In this talk I'll explain how we're breaking up our React monoliths and enabling interoperability using multiple React trees and reactive variables.

Everyone has a pattern library or dreams about having one. We went through conversations and the codification of our visual dictionary and then we ended up with a beautiful living document.But what happens when we need to re-use our components and they don’t fit in the design? How do we re-use our patterns in slightly different use cases?We have all the tech to make a front end really modular, we have techniques and methodologies which enabled us avoiding the bad parts of the languages we use. Every part of the puzzle seems to be falling in the right place.Yet, sometimes we are struggling in handling the variations of our patterns in a reliable and maintainable way. Our codebase is getting filled with exceptions and overrides and refactoring of base patterns becomes impossible.Not a recipe for success, more of a way to frame the problem, identify some ideas we tried and re-discuss the way we approach componentisation.
