Web development is the process of creating websites, applications and other online services. It involves a combination of coding languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and others to create an interactive user experience. The goal of web development is to create a website or application that is fast, secure, and easy to use. Web developers must understand how to design, build and maintain websites while also considering the user experience and making sure the code is optimized for performance.

Debugging JS
As developers, we spend much of our time debugging apps - often code we didn't even write. Sadly, few developers have ever been taught how to approach debugging - it's something most of us learn through painful experience.  The good news is you _can_ learn how to debug effectively, and there's several key techniques and tools you can use for debugging JS and React apps.

Jotai Atoms Are Just Functions
Jotai is a state management library. We have been developing it primarily for React, but it's conceptually not tied to React. It this talk, we will see how Jotai atoms work and learn about the mental model we should have. Atoms are framework-agnostic abstraction to represent states, and they are basically just functions. Understanding the atom abstraction will help designing and implementing states in your applications with Jotai

Don't Solve Problems, Eliminate Them
Humans are natural problem solvers and we're good enough at it that we've survived over the centuries and become the dominant species of the planet. Because we're so good at it, we sometimes become problem seekers too–looking for problems we can solve. Those who most successfully accomplish their goals are the problem eliminators. Let's talk about the distinction between solving and eliminating problems with examples from inside and outside the coding world.

AHA Programming
Are you the kind of programmer who prefers to never see the same code in two places, or do you make liberal use of copy/paste? Many developers swear the Don't Repeat Yourself (DRY) philosophy while others prefer to Write Everything Twice (WET). But which of these produces more maintainable codebases? I've seen both of these approaches lay waste to codebases and I have a new ideology I would like to propose to you: Avoid Hasty Abstractions (AHA). In this keynote, we'll talk about abstraction and how you can improve a codebase applying and creating abstractions more thoughtfully as well as how to get yourself out of a mess of over or under-abstraction.

GraphQL in 2023 - Still Relevant?
With fetching libraries like TanStack Query, swr, or RTK Query becoming more widespread, some of the immediate “selling points” of GraphQL clients seem to be less unique - so it might be a good idea to take a step back and ask the question “is this even still relevant?”. And to already take the answer away - it is “yes”. The unique selling points of GraphQL go far beyond having a smooth data fetching experience by solving many inter-team and architectural problems. While it might not always be immediately evident as a benefit for us as Frontend Developers,  GraphQL gives us a lot of freedom and makes us less dependent on backend teams implementing a Backend-for-the-frontend for us. Also, while data-fetching libraries have made it a lot easier to work with REST nowadays, GraphQL still has properties that are just not present in traditional REST APIs, and on top of that GraphQL has kept evolving. New directives like @live or @defer enable developers to create a fantastic user experience with very little work - especially when combined with React’s new suspense features.

Zod === Typescript, but at Runtime in Your React Applications
In this talk, I want to show how we can use Zod to guarantee the type in a React Application at runtime. Environment variables, HTTP requests, forms and so on could create troubles in our applications, mainly if they contain unexpected types. Using Zod, we can create schemas to guarantee the types expected in our editor at runtime. In this way, we can react quickly when an environment variable misses or when someone changes the API contract without informing us.
A small validation layer in our applications can prevent a bad user experience and notify us immediately, so we can fix the problem as soon as possible and mitigate the visualization of wrong data.

Pushing Boundaries To The Edge
While the technology goes further and further, web development tries to get closer to the user. CDNs and web servers are evolving, and they now offer us the possibility to execute server-side logic without depending on a unique data center located in a specific place in the world. Let’s present the concept of The Edge. We will see how it works, and we’ll talk about Edge Functions. We’ll discuss why the main hosting providers are introducing this technology, and why different JavaScript frameworks are modeling their approaches based on Edge computing.

Keep Calm and Deploy On: Creating Safer Releases with Feature Flags
Creating and deploying new software is risky. We've all seen how easily bugs arise, causing software to be poorly delivered or to the wrong people. What's more, depending on how tightly we couple our systems and services, they can interact unexpectedly and unfortunately with existing software or hardware. Beyond unintended consequences, we can also find that people can use our services for nefarious purposes. It's essential to have safety nets in place when things don't go as planned or people attempt to break the rules. In this session, we'll discuss how feature flags can work in both temporary and permanent scenarios to enable you to break the quality triangle and deliver quality promptly.

How do you keep your teams moving fast and shipping features to users regularly if your PRs take forever to be tested and deployed?
After exploring a few options we decided to go down the Nx route. Let’s look at how to migrate a large codebase to Nx and take advantage of its incremental builds!

You Do Have Time to Build it Twice
If you don’t have time to build it right, when will you have time to build it twice? In hyper growth startups the old adage breaks down. You get an expanding time horizon – IF you can get it shipped. An imperfect feature next week beats the perfect feature 2 months from now. Your code won’t matter if you’re dead. I didn’t believe this until I saw it myself. A startup on the cusp of hockeystick hired me to rewrite their jQuery app in React. Their tech proved the idea then became a burden. Over the next year we rewrote the whole app from scratch, grew a team of React experts, created a codebase that’s a joy to work with, and got the company to a $100,000,000 Series B. All because the early engineers knew that if the crappy version works out, there’s going to be time and resources to fix it later. This talk is about what I’ve learned while rewriting an app with users banging down the door.

We Are All Hemingway
Do you know that the first novel ever written dates back in 1021. Its author is the Japan noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu. Till then countless of writers put their thoughts on paper and countless of readers experience their stories. People write for decades and we, as software developers, kind of ignore their craft. We write too. Not novels but software. Isn't it this still writing? Believe it or not there is a lot in common between creating fiction and writing code. In this presentation we will see how close we are to giants like Hemingway and Stephen King. Can we get some of their wisdom and apply it to our daily job as engineers. Come to this talk and will get a few practical advices. I hope my presentation will make you a slightly better React developer.

Put Down the Javascript – Level Up with the Fundamentals of Web Development
Seasoned and beginner alike, developers have a habit of jumping right into a framework or new technology that makes a lot of promises while also glazing over important fundamentals that without, tend to hold back a website or application’s potential. Without some basic knowledge of HTML, you might inadvertently exclude people from learning about your company through your website due to poor accessibility. Lacking an understanding or simply being afraid of CSS, you might be more prone to add unnecessary libraries on top of libraries that just add to the weight of the page, impacting how quickly your app can load. In this talk, we’ll go over some basic HTML and CSS strategies that can immediately be used right alongside of JavaScript including frameworks like React and Vue that will provide another range of benefits like better accessibility, simpler code, and ways you can improve SEO letting search engines like Google more easily figure out what your page is about.
