Matteo Collina
Matteo is the Co-Founder and CTO of Platformatic.dev with the goal to remove all friction from backend development. He is also a prolific Open Source author in the JavaScript ecosystem and modules he maintain are downloaded more than 12 billion times a year. Previously he was Chief Software Architect at NearForm, the best professional services company in the JavaScript ecosystem. In 2014, he defended his Ph.D. thesis titled "Application Platforms for the Internet of Things". Matteo is a member of the Node.js Technical Steering Committee focusing on streams, diagnostics and http. He is also the author of the fast logger Pino and of the Fastify web framework. Matteo is an renowed international speaker after more than 60 conferences, including OpenJS World, Node.js Interactive, NodeConf.eu, NodeSummit, JSConf.Asia, WebRebels, and JsDay just to name a few. He is also co-author of the book "Node.js Cookbook, Third Edition" edited by Packt. In the summer he loves sailing the Sirocco.

I was working on a deadline to implement types for our OpenAPI client, and I would have missed our release window. I needed something different and easier to build. I Would Never Use an ORM

What's an ORM? An Object-Relational Mapping tool (ORM) is a library to map a SQL table to a Class. In most cases, ORMs force the users to structure their code to have Model objects that include both data access and business logic.
Once upon a time, I did several projects using ORMs as I followed the common belief that they would simplify the development and maintenance of projects. I was wrong. ORMs are often a hurdle to overcome for the most complex part of a project.
As the next stop of my journey, I recommended people use the native languages of their databases, e.g., SQL. This works great for the most part, but it creates quite a struggle: there is a lot of boilerplate code to write that can be pretty tedious. I was wrong, again.

Can We Double HTTP Client Throughput?
The Node.js HTTP client is a fundamental part of any application, yet many think it cannot be improved. I took this as a challenge and I’m now ready to present a new HTTP client for Node.js, undici, that doubles the throughput of your application The story behind this improvement begins with the birth of TCP/IP and it is rooted in one of the fundamental limitations of networking: head-of-line blocking (HOL blocking). HOL blocking is one of those topics that developers blissfully ignore and yet it deeply impacts the runtime experience of the distributed applications that they build every day. Undici is a HTTP/1.1 client that avoids HOL blocking using keep-alive and pipelining, resulting in a doubling of your application throughput.

Multithreaded Logging with Pino

Almost every developer thinks that adding one more log line would not decrease the performance of their server... until logging becomes the biggest bottleneck for their systems! We created one of the fastest JSON loggers for Node.js: pino. One of our key decisions was to remove all "transport" to another process (or infrastructure): it reduced both CPU and memory consumption, removing any bottleneck from logging. However, this created friction and lowered the developer experience of using Pino and in-process transports is the most asked feature our user.In the upcoming version 7, we will solve this problem and increase throughput at the same time: we are introducing pino.transport() to start a worker thread that you can use to transfer your logs safely to other destinations, without sacrificing neither performance nor the developer experience.
